Vision
The vision of Sunset Middle School is to inspire and engage the whole child to become a life-long learner.
Mission
Our mission is to create a community where all things are possible and the opportunity of working towards excellence is the expectation for all students.
Beliefs
As we transition into a school offering Advanced Academics with emphasis in the Visual and Performing Arts, we believe that teaching and learning IN and THROUGH the arts, building 21st Century Skills, personal strengths, community, and an appreciation of human diversity are all possible while increasing student achievement.
Goals
Our teaching goal is instruction that is all encompassing, engaging, and inspires students to achieve personal goals through middle school and beyond. We will do this by sharing brain-based research and building community partnerships.
Our academic goals align with the district and state expectations that all students will increase performance and growth in reading, writing, and math; no less than one year's growth.
History
Originally opened in 1975 as Longmont Junior High School, the name change and the move to a middle school philosophy occurred in 1991. Sunset is located adjacent to Affolter Park in the middle of a high tech industrial park area and serves the south central portion (including Niwot and Southmoor Park) of Longmont.
Feeder Pattern
Students leaving Sunset Middle School will attend Niwot High School. A large portion of Sunset Middle School students previously attended either Burlington Elementary School, Indian Peaks Elementary School, or Niwot Elementary School.
